Score Studies

Having collected over a hundred manuscript scores, ranging from solo piano pieces to full orchestra, I have studies the inner craft behind every composer’s writing.

Debussy, La Mer, opening

I was able to gain invaluable insight into the construction of orchestral pieces by studying scores from Debussy, Ravel, Holst and Mahler. This meant breaking down the scores of manuscript books, page by page, so that I could understand how each instrumental part works in tandem with the rest to create a whole sound.

Ravel-Mussogsky pictures at an exhibition

For part of my Master’s degree I studied the inspirations of Mahler’s music in modern media music.
